Was reading this post this morning: Employment: A Right Or A Privilege? and it got me thinking that I believe employment is a privilege.

Having taught business and entrepreneurship classes for many years we would discuss how politicians and unions would demand "good jobs" for people.  I even showed a picture a a women holding a sign that said "We Want Jobs Now!"

What was missing from the conversation, in my opinion, was whether there was enough consumer demand for the creation of those "good jobs", for without demand, i.e. wants and needs of consumers, there is no reason for a business to hire anyone let alone keep its doors open.

This concept appears to be lost on many politicians including Hillary Clinton who said "Don't let anybody tell you that it's corporations and businesses that create jobs..." or President Obama who said during his 2012 reelection campaign, “If you’ve got a business – you didn’t build that."

Government can 'invest' all the money they want in windfarms, electric cars or solar panels, for example, but if no one wants what these tax dollars produce, no amount of money will create the demand needed to hire anyone no matter whether you feel employment is a 'right' or a 'privilege'.

It's articles like this that make we wonder if this is one of the reasons 93-plus million potential workers have dropped out of the workforce and stopped looking for a new job:

Here is an article on the eleven states that cannot check your credit as a requirement for employment. At the beginning of the 'Great Recession' many companies were doing just that and then denying employment opportunities because you had bad credit that was caused because you were unemployed.    11 States Where Employers Can't Check Your Credit
